What’s the Difference Between the Ford Bronco and Ford Bronco Sport?

The Ford Bronco is a classic SUV that was previously a part of Ford’s vehicle lineup between the 1966 and 1996 model years. Although the Bronco was popular on the auto market and went through five generations during its time on the market, Ford opted to discontinue production of the Ford Bronco after the 1996 model year. 

After 25 years of waiting, the Ford Bronco is finally set to make a comeback to the mainstream auto market for the 2021 model year. This is an exciting update, as many classic Ford fans lamented the 1996 discontinuation of the Ford Bronco and have been looking forward to its re-release on the mainstream auto market.

It seems that Ford fans will actually be getting not just one but two Ford Bronco models for the 2021 model year: the Ford Bronco and the Ford Bronco Sport. The Ford Bronco and the Ford Bronco Sport debuted on the exact same day, which was confusing for many Ford fans. Although the Ford Bronco and Ford Bronco Sport are both SUVs, they are actually not very similar. While both models are SUVs and feature the same stylish boxy aesthetics, the Ford Bronco Sport was designed specifically for off-roading capabilities and the two upcoming Bronco models differ significantly in many important areas.

Body Design 

The Ford Bronco has a traditional SUV body design. It features a body-on-frame design that is—like most SUVs—based on that of a classic pickup truck. 

The Ford Bronco Sport, on the other hand, has a one-piece unibody design that is more similar to the body design of a sedan than that of a truck or classic SUV. 

Engine Options 

The Ford Bronco and the Ford Bronco Sport are available with completely different engine options, which helps emphasize just how different the two Bronco models actually are in terms of drive performance. 

The Ford Bronco is available with two engine options. It either comes with a 2.3-L turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine or a 2.7-L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine. The 2.3-L engine offers 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque and the 2.7-L engine delivers 310 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. 

On the other hand, the Ford Bronco Sport comes with either a 1.5-L turbocharged EcoBoost three-cylinder engine or a 2.0-L turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. The 1.5-L engine delivers 181 horsepower and 190 lb.-ft. of torque, while the 2.0-L engine offers 245 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. 

Transmission Systems 

The transmissions of the Ford Bronco and the Ford Bronco Sport also differ from one another. 

The Ford Bronco is available with either a 7-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic transmission, whereas the Ford Bronco Sport comes with 8-speed automatic transmission. 

When all is said and done, the Ford Bronco and the Ford Bronco Sport are both excellent vehicle options. Based on early critic reviews, these two SUVs are unlikely to disappoint once they finally hit the market.
